To get a better understanding about how Console applications work, you really need to build one. So, let s start with a simple application that gathers data from a computer using some of the built-in objects that .NET provides. Often a developer needs to know how a computer was set up when a bug was recorded. This can be a tedious job if done manually. The first is the My.Computer object. (You first encountered the My namespace in Exercise 5-3, but here we ll cover it in more detail.) This built-in object is created for you automatically when your application starts up. This means that you do not have to create the object in your code; you only need to call the methods the object contains. This object provides general information about the operating system and settings on the computer that the program is running on. Note At the time of this writing, My.Computer is not directly available in C#, so you will need to add a reference to it through VB .NET before you can use the simple methods in the My.Computer object. To add a reference in your project, you would use the Project Add Reference menu in Visual Studio. From the .NET tab, scroll down until you see the Microsoft.VisualBasic component name and double-click on that. You would also have to make a new object from VB .NET as we have done in Listing 7-2.
