This model usually spans several firewalls because it links applications contained within an extranet in a resource organization to the internal directory stores of account organizations. The only trust that exists in this model is the federation trust, which is always a one-way trust from the resource organization to the account organization(s). This is the most common AD FS deployment scenario. (See Figure 17-4, presented earlier.) Federated Web SSO with Forest Trust In this model, the organization uses two AD DS forests. One is the internal forest, but the second one is an external forest located within a perimeter network. A forest trust is established between the forest in the perimeter network and the internal forest. In addition, a federation trust is established between the resource federation server, which is located within the perimeter, and the account federation server, located in the internal network. In this scenario, external users have accounts in the perimeter forest, and internal users have accounts in the internal forest. The AD FS systems federate the access rights from the accounts in both forests to the applications in the perimeter. Because of this, internal users have access to the applications from both the internal network and the Internet, whereas external users have access to the applications only from the Internet. (See Figure 17-5.)

The NAT server must be placed on the internal network with two network adapter cards. One adapter card must be configured with the external public IP address, which connects to the Internet, and the other with the internal private IP address, which is connected to the private internal network. Users on the private network need to have the default gateway configured as the private IP address of the NAT server. Because the scenario requires automatic allocation of IP address information, you should configure the NAT server as a DHCP allocator. The DHCP allocator will issue IP addresses, as well as the subnet masks and default gateway information, to all internal users.
